What opportunities do the big city present?

Here in Clintonville I feel that we are quite restrained.  Not many opportunities are available for people our age, so I was wondering if you feel the big city offers you more options for things like jobs, clubs, and volunteer or community service hours.

  1. In Chicago, there are so many opportunities. For our age, there are job offers, the Boys and Girls Club, in certain areas, and volunteer work. Actually, for EPIC's seniors we have to complete community service hours. Also, here in Chicago, there are many centers that let the youth express their talent: singing, dancing, and drawing. There's a lot of exploring in Chicago.

  2. There's a program offered in our area called After School Matters. The program allows students to take a temporary job, which is great if you're looking to see what a particular career does, or if money is wanted. I took a culinary job through this program; it was really fun since we got to set up a buffet and allow the public to enter.

  3. Chicago has many clubs for youth to join. In the summer, Chicago Park District holds day camp for kids at parks across the city. After School Matters is also a program that allows students to work while learning about a certain subject.

Schools in Chicago also require students to have community service hours. I am not sure how other city schools organize it, but our school is going to pair us up with a service so that we can do our volunteer work.

There are always smaller businesses around Chicago that hire students such as restaurants, barbershops, and small retail stores.

  4. We have a lot of entertainments. We have movies, Navy Pier, David Busters, Theaters, and etc.

  5. There are a lot of opportunities for students in Chicago, and due to the large population, there is also a lot of competition for these opportunities. I have had an apprenticeship, two internships, and am currently working in a chocolate store in downtown Chicago. Age definitely determines our eligibility for programs. My friends and I have missed out on many opportunities because we were under the age of 18.

There is an organization known as Calumet is My BackYard (CIMBY) which is one of the largest wildlife organizations in the city. They take high schools on trips to woodland areas to clean brush and other trash. I received 122 hours of community service through them.

There are city-wide poetry clubs, gaming teams, studios, gymnasiums, and almost any other recreational club or hobby there is through our park districts. There are many more, but I have not even been exposed to them all.
