It is often suggested that where we live helps to shape how we see the world. How do you think your experience, your ideas about the world, your education, opportunities, and interests would be different if you had grown up and attended high school in an urban/inner city areas OR in a rural area? Please consider drawing upon any real or imagined experiences you have had personally about urban/rural life, or those from pieces you have read as part of your studies at CHS/Epic.

Purpose
The goal of this blog is to help you explore the topic for the Akey Family Scholarship as well as to learn about other teens' experiences. You may conclude that location matters very much or very little to who you are or who you may become. Regardless, we hope this experience is interesting and enriching to you.

I think location matters a whole lot, simply in developing the way you think about people who are different from you. There are so many stereotypes out there, and people who have never experienced interactions with those stereotyped people firsthand, assume and are often wrong. It is crazy to me how different people think just because they grew up in different places, around different types of people. I think this blog was a good idea!
ReplyDeleteI think that location matters the most. In variety of areas theres so much violence and killings nowadays you really have to watch yourself. Like me I am from chicago Illinois living in the hundreds. In the hundreds they’re always shooting and killing people it just don’t make any sense. Growing up in a violent neighborhood is hard but now I know to always mind my own business until the desired future is a success.

ReplyDeleteYour environment dictates your purpose, for it is what you see or don't see everyday that determines what you what and drive to get it. If you are in a bad environment, you strive to do better to be there anymore. If you are in a good environment, you strive to stay there or do even better.
ReplyDeleteLocation matters very much. Some may even say you can determine ones personality based on their location. There's a variety of people in a urban environment. Some you'll most likely be concerned about and others that grow up to be very successful.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by "some you'll most likely be concerned about"? In what ways would you be concerned about people, or what situations would they be in to make you concerned?
DeleteOne can probably picture themselves living in their hometowns forever. Some people think that they have no other option than to be like the people around them, or conserve the lifestyle that they've been exposed to. This idea is heavily influenced by location. However, it is completely possible for someone to be different, stand out, and change the way they live or the place that they live in. In reality, I believe that a person who really works hard and wants to change can absolutely do so with enough effort. But, this is not easy, and in most cases it’s not common because of where people live. In Chicago, there are close to 3 million people and thousands if not millions of opportunities for them. Location matters because it determines quality and quantity. Depending on a person’s interest, they can decide if they want to be surrounded by lots of people, or few. In essence, make sure you take advantage of what you’re offered, and don’t hesitate to stretch your hand out for more, or, feel free to keep your hands in your pockets when you feel you have what you need.
